A refractometer is a device that measures the specific gravity of your beer or wort similar to a hydrometer. It does so by sampling a small amount of liquid and looking at it optically. The big advantage over a hydrometer is the small sample size needed. Only a few drops are needed to get a gravity reading.

Can also be used for the density of sugar-related liquids such as fruit juice, soft drinks and wine.

The refractometer only requires a tiny sample of your brewing wort to measure the SG and Brix %. Simply use a pipette or spoon to take a sample straight from your brewing vessel or fermenter, place on the refractometer screen and hold it up to the light to view the SG and Brix % results.

There is also no need for temperature correction due to Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC).
