Progress Hops – Classic British Hop Character with Smooth, Gentle Bitterness
Progress hops are a heritage English hop variety first bred at Wye College in the 1950s. Developed as an improved alternative to Fuggle, they deliver similar traditional flavours but with better reliability in the field. Today, Progress remains a favourite among UK and Irish brewers looking for a hop that offers subtle aroma, smooth bitterness, and authentic British character.
Flavour & Brewing Profile of Progress Hops
Progress hops are known for their soft, well-rounded bitterness, making them ideal for classic British beer styles. Their flavour profile is typically described as:
- Light grassy notes
- Soft honey-like sweetness
- Gentle spice and mild herbal undertones
These delicate characteristics integrate seamlessly into bitters, porters, milds, and other traditional ale styles.
With moderate alpha acids (usually 5–8%), Progress can be used in both bittering and aroma additions. In paler or lower-ABV beers, it provides a clean foundation that doesn’t overpower the malt. When used later in the boil, Progress offers a balanced, mellow hop character that enhances rather than dominates the finished beer.
Why Brewers Choose Progress Hops
Brewers value Progress hops for their dependability, balance, and compatibility with English malt profiles. They are widely used in cask ales and session beers where subtle hop expression and smooth drinkability are essential.
Key advantages include:
- Consistent performance in the brewhouse
- Works well with British base malts
- Stable, reliable yields and good drying qualities
- Great for blending with stronger hop varieties to round out bitterness in more hop-forward recipes
Whether you’re brewing a traditional bitter or refining a nuanced ale recipe, Progress hops bring classic English character with dependable results.
